Best Albums of 2012 (TK)

2012 has been a great year. In fact I can’t remember the last time I had this much troubles settling for my top ten albums. After a couple of weeks of internal fighting I did however manage to sort out a list, still felt the need to include some honorary mentions though. I usually also post some of the years disappointments in my list, but since 2012 has been such a great year all in all I’ll just concentrate on the positive. Here we go…

Top 10 Albums of 2012

Woods of Ypres - Woods 5

#1

Woods of Ypres – “Woods 5: Grey Skies & Electric Lights” [Earache Records, 2012]

I honestly don’t remember the last time I fell in love with an album the way I fell in love with “Woods 5: Grey Skies…“, but I’m guessing it was sometime back in the 90’s.  Too bad it took the death of David Gold (R.I.P.) for me to discover this fantastic piece of black/doom metal.

Devin Townsend Project - Epicloud

#2

Devin Townsend Project– “Epicloud” [HevyDevy/InsideOut Music, 2012]

The fact that Devin Townsend is a genius is something I already came to terms with during his SYL-years. “Epicloud” is uplifting, filled with love and just fluffy all around and I love it! And if Devin isn’t enough to love, “Epicloud” also features one of the most lovely voice on this planet, Anneke van Giersbergen.

Naglfar - Téras

#3

Naglfar – “Téras” [Century Media, 2012]

At the moment my Naglfar collection consists of 38 unique releases. 6 of these are different versions of “Téras“.  I guess telling you that I like this band would be somewhat of an understatement. “Téras” might not be my favourite album, but still it beats pretty much everything else released this year (except for the two albums listed above).

Anaal Nathrakh - Vanitas

#4

Anaal Nathrakh – “Vanitas” [Candlelight Records, 2012]

Anaal Nathrakh finally manages to put out and album that is killer from start to finish. I’ve been a long time fan of these crazy fucks, but sadly never  got into whole albums (just random songs), until “Vanitas” that is. This is musical chaos under perfect fucking order!!

Gojira - L'enfant Sauvage

#5

Gojira – “L’enfant Sauvage” [Roadrunner Records, 2012]

Gojira does it again. Still not better than “From Mars to Sirius“, but a great display of musical brilliance. Modern progressive groove metal with a production that puts pretty much most of todays modern productions to shame.

Nidingr - Greatest of Deceivers

#6

Nidingr – “Greatest of Deceivers” [Indie Recordings, 2012]

Greatest of Deceivers” has everything I want from a good black metal album – aggression, rawness, speed, technique, heaviness, variety and last but not least; a fantastic production. Read review here.

Cattle Decapitation - Monolith of Humanity

#7

Cattle Decapitation – “Monolith of Humanity” [Metal Blade, 2012]

Some people are pissed off by the fact that Cattle Decapitation has vegetarians in the band and sing about environmental stuff etc. Well, guess what? Both Carcass and Napalm Death did the same back in the 90’s and who gave/gives a shit?! Great music is great fucking music whether you like to eat beef or not.

Nekromantheon - Rise, Vulcan Spectre

#8

Nekromantheon – “Rise, Vulcan Spectre” [Indie Recordings, 2012]

Thrash Metal has been trending on and off for the past 10-15 years or so. During these bursts, occasionally a few of the new thrash bands are to my liking. Norwegian Nekromantheon is one of these bands. This is exactly how I like my thrash – Like a bastard son of early Kreator, Slayer, Sodom and Sepultura.

Dying Fetus - Reign Supreme

#9

Dying Fetus – “Reign Supreme” [Relapse Records, 2012]

Nobody delivers the groove as Maryland’s Dying Fetus do, and I mean NOBODY! Brutal death metal so groovy you actually wish this was played at the discos on friday nights so people could dance to real music instead of all “Gangnam Style“-shit today’s society has to put up with.

Gloria Morti - Lateral Constraint

#10

Gloria Morti – “Lateral Constraint” [Cyclone Empire, 2012]

Finnish Gloria Morti blackened death metal (or deathened black metal?) came as a total surprise, knocking me off my chair (and also knocking “Aeons Black” from my top 10). A Brilliant and “easy to listen to” album on so many levels. Read review here.

Honorable mentions (close, but no cigar):

(In alphabetical order): The 11th Hour – “Lacrima Mortis”, Aeon – “Aeons Black”, Alcest – “Les voyages de l’âme”, Black Breath – “Sentenced to Life”, Coldworker – “The Doomsayer’s Call”, Enslaved – “RIITIIR”, Helltrain – “Death is Coming”, Khonsu – “Anomalia”, Mgła – “With hearts towards none”, Miseration – “Tragedy has Spoken”, Ofermod – “Thaumiel”, Skeletal Remains – “Beyond the Flesh”.
