GENRE: Black Metal
RATING: 6.0 / 10
Five years have passed since the last offering by the swedish outfit Pest, being the fourth full-length to date. What they have been doing since 1997 is making old-school black metal the traditional way, mainly for fans of Darkthrone and early Bathory.
After two mediocre albums in 2003 and 2005, they somehow released a really powerful album in 2008, entitled “Rest In Morbid Darkness“. I can’t say that the new album surpasses their last one, but it’s still a nice album. You will find no innovation here at all, it’s a formula that has been done and re-done for years now in black metal. I’m sure that what you hear here, you have heard before from other bands. For the fans that don’t want originality but dig this certain type of music, you’ll be pleased with the album.
The sound is at about the same level as their last album, they’ve changed to a bit faster compositional style that touches the borders of black/thrash, even though there are some quite “calm” parts here and there. I don’t see any flaws in the production or mixing either. The music on this record is not to be analyzed very much, it’s a typical black metal package that all of us are familiar with. You know what you are getting into if you decide to give a closer look at this band.
