ALBUM: Teratism – “La Bas” EP
LABEL: Negativity Records
GENRE: Black Metal
RATING: 8.0 / 10
Black Metal from the US or USBM. Words that usually ends up with me stating the obvious – that USBM ain’t nothing more than a bad copy of what’s been happening here in Scandinavia for over nearly 20 years now. But, I guess it’s about time for me to let go of my old prejucides since Teratism is yet another proof that not all USBM is bad. In fact, I dig this quite a lot!
Not having heard Teratism prior to receiving the bands EP (on vinyl nevertheless) I can not compare to the bands earlier releases, although after some YouTubing I may state that they haven’t made any drastic changes to their formula. The sound picture on “La Bas” is however better than on all the earlier recordings that I dug up. It almost reminds me of some of the earlier Necromorbus Studios recordings and at that also at times makes me think of the eminent Funeral Mist. Everything sounds organic and alive, but at the same time wet, repugnant and filthy. Just the way black metal should be done.
If there’s anything to complain about when it comes to “Le Bas” it is its short lenght and perhaps that the cover-version of Black Widow‘s classic “Come to the Sabbath”, although sligthly original, just don’t do it for me. But as for the rest of the three songs as well for the graphical aspect/layout of this release I highly recommend it!
