ALBUM: Triumph, Genus – “Všehorovnost je porážkou převyšujících”
LABEL: Iron Bonehead Productions/W.T.C. Productions
GENRE: Black Metal
RATING: 9.5 / 10
Listening to this album struck me with the fact that I’ve been listening to black metal for 21 years and to be honest not much released during the last decade has really impressed me. Sure, there’s been a lot of good stuff released, but where are the Opus Nocturne’s, Pure Holocaust’s, In the Nighside Eclipse’s, Under a Funeral Moon’s, Blood Ritual’s and so on? I don’t know? maybe I just really really miss the 90’s?
Czech newcomers Triumph, Genus is one of the most pleasant surprises I’ve experienced in the last decade. Even though “Stručně zahrnout stahující přítěž” in no way reinvents, nor bring anything new to the table, they manage to wake something in me that has been dormant for quite some time. This is 32 minutes of blissful early 90’s black metal riffing, great driven drumming and chanting vocals courtesy of vocalist Jaroslav. As for the production I couldn’t ask for anything to be different. It’s well produced, but still with and organic almost live-like feeling, all in all exactly the way I like my black metal.
I’ve always had a soft spot for the Czech black metal scene (Master’s Hammer, Root, Maniac Butcher, Dark Storm, Cult of Fire) and to be honest “Stručně zahrnout stahující přítěž” has quickly climbed to the ranks of one of my favourite black metal albums of 2013. Quite possibly the best black metal I’ve heard, not only in 2013, but for the last decade. Marduk‘s “Opus Nocturne” has been one of my favourite albums for nearly 20 years now and as this is the first album that has given me the same feeling it gave me once, the future for “Stručně zahrnout stahující přítěž” looks very promising. But, I’ll get back to you in 20 years to let you know if it stood the tests of time, ok.
