ALBUM: Godhunter – “City of Dust”
GENRE: Sludge Metal
RATING: 8.0 / 10
Let me get this out of the way first. Stoner metal and anything like it is not something I usually enjoy. I usually find it to be far too weak and pretty boring for the most part despite how people refer to it as being really heavy or whatever. However, if you mix in the right elements from the avenues of metal that I do enjoy normally, I may find a diamond in the rough. That’s exactly what “City of Dust” by Godhunter has turned out to be.
As it turns out, Godhunter incorporates some pretty harsh vocals with some groovy, sludgy riffs on “CoD” (the band’s first full-length, mind you) that turns out to be not only listenable for me but quite enjoyable. The guitar sound is heavy, buzzy, and splatters every groovy riff through the speakers with almost uncanny clarity, and the ever-present bottom end of the album provides more than enough weighty mass to moor each track firmly to the ground. Now while the production, particularly on the drums, is not quite what I long to hear in any modern form of metal, I do think it works just enough to get by.
This album is 48 minutes of quality material that won’t necessarily set the world ablaze, but it will give you a good excuse to crank up the watts in the stereo and pulverize your brain for a little while. If you’re into metal with a healthy dose of groovy stoner sludge and angry vocals, Godhunter is definitely a band worth checking out.
And dat cover.
